rafia
o a regresarlas a nuestras bocas y probarlas otra vez
lenguas
y a limpiarlas otra vez

me recibe y me acoge

The River That Is Within

Mama taught us how to burn words
To scatter the ashes in the fireplace and pretend we never had
voices
Those days
We carried our emptiness to our beds and nibbled at our fingers
Hoping to get a little taste of ash

Mama taught us how to burn words
But she never taught us how to quench them before they got the
raffia
Or how to put them back in our mouths and taste them again
So we learnt how to soak our words in rivers hiding under our
tongues
And make them clean again

You see the river, the fishes, the dust is on my forehead
Don’t let the waters dry, I even told the goddess
But, the goddess speaks when she wants
Take me with you down the windowpanes
Lock me up in the hall of shame
Make me feel empty, empty to the wholeness of my heart

These days, when the roads are rough
I look up to the river and shed tears
I wash my face at the river and tell her everything that is going on
When I am at the river
There is a sparkle, the river smiles at me, she cheers me up
She looks up to me and says nice things to me
People who make others happy are paid with ingratitude
There is happiness found in the heart of fools
Fools are the ones who make others happy
To remain sad. Sadness is like sand. It kills when it can
But, the river that speaks to me is not
The one that spoke to you

Busca a Fela

busca a Fela

Find Fela

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth
For the old heaven and the old earth were passed away
The music was blindfolded
The sarcasm couldn’t bite
The songs were love songs in the midst of war
It was a new earth
An earth in search of lyrical warriors and musical soldiers
But the old heaven had passed away
A heaven that once held the first real seed of Abeokuta
The man whose music built furnaces inside oceans
His jazz played against the weather
And his voice swarm against the current
Last night I saw a vision of a man sitting in a throne of flames
Surrounded by burning cherubim
And a voice said to me
Find Fela

Queremos bailar

We Want to Dance

If we want to dance
We have to go out in the open
Where the birds are singing to the goats
If we want to dance
We have to go out in the open
And listen to the women clap their hands
If we want to dance
We have to gather the drums and dance
We have to listen to the harmonica
We have to listen to the drums
We have to listen to the kora
We have to clap and dance
And shake our posterior
We have to dance
Really.Really. We have to dance
If we want to dance, we have to dance
Just like the goddess of music in blue
The water of life has deepened
Its depth, the creed and its fullness, charmed
By the solidity of music, all wrapped in cleanliness
What we cherish is what we love
And we love something, we cherish it.
Music is the sweetness of brightness
It is the brightness of life
It is the reason why people live
And the reason why they reason
If you look at the clock on the wall
And it says midnight on a Friday night
And you don’t see anyone dancing
You have to check the chimneys
If they have been visited by ghosts

If we want to dance, we have to dance
In the city centre, the women are jubilating
The king is back and we have to find those
Who can dance to salsa to hold themselves?
We will find the kind of love we have preached
Music is the only way we can dance away our pain
Gather the entire neighbourhood
Tell them to not worry anymore
That there is a King on his way
Even when it rains, people must dance
They must not dance only when there is a song
You can dance the Song of the Spirits
Haven’t you heard the thunder strike?
People dance to that.
Music.
Plays.
People.
Dance.
It is the time of the conga, the beauty of drums
The trumpet blows and the waist wiggles
The earth is moving, but the heavens don’t move
What we have is the happiness
That corrodes with merriment
If we look at the walls with graffiti
The joy of music replenishes our hearts
